Let's Get Reading.  This is your first lesson of week 1.  Make sure you have left an hour for you and your child to work together.  The lesson is set up so that you and your child can watch the video where I will make the explicit instruction easy and then you can hit pause and do the activity with the resources that arrived in your kit.  Check the level on the front of your book as there are two levels 2A and 2B.  Choose the video that matches your book.

Happy Reading!

Level 2 Unit 5 - a-e in cake

This week we are starting split digraphs.  What is a spilt digraph?

Remember a digraph is when we have two letters making a new sound like th, t and h make seperate sounds on their own but when they come together they make th in three.

A split digraph is when our two letters making the new sound has another letter in between, to be precise a consonant like in cake we have k between the a and the e.

Our saying to help remember this one is magic e makes a say ay.  In the video I explain that e is magic it gives all its power to a to make it say ay and then it is silent.

Happy Reading!

Level 2 Unit 9 - ng in ring

Everybody knows ing but ing is not a grapheme it is a spelling rule. We often add it to the end of verbs and many of you would have heard of “e goes away when ing comes to stay.” The actual rule is e goes away when ing comes to stay or any other suffix that starts with a vowel but more about that latter.

So back to ng, n and g make ng in ring. We also find it with other vowels like in song, bang and lung.  This is why we need to ng without the I turning it into ing.
