Tired of having the same meeting over and over about your dyslexic child. Every year you get a new teacher and it feels like you are starting back at the start.
The start of a new school year can be hard for a child with a learning difference and for a parent.
Lets face it as a parent you have possibly had many meetings with the school, with learning support and with your students teacher. Sometimes you might walk out feeling like yes this person gets my kid, sometimes you might have felt like you were hitting your head on a brick wall.
Every parent with a child with Dyslexia or any learning difference has probably felt the dread of the new school year. The what if’s swirl around your head. You just don’t want to start back at square one.
Today I am going to give you a plan/process to get rid of or at least decrease the what if’s and I recommend activating that plan now in term 4
Most schools are currently creating their class lists for 2024 so now is the best time to make suggestions or recommendations for what your child needs. It is a great time to jump in and do some early work so your child can have a great start to the school year and I am going to make it simple and easy, you can even download the My child Summary I use for my own kids and students I work with.
Here’s what I recommend:
1. Make a request for a 2024 class based on educational, social and emotional needs.
2. Work out your child’s strengths and weaknesses
3. Write a My Child Summary for the 2024 classroom teacher
4. Email it to the 2024 teacher once you find out who they are.
Step 1
Many schools will have a formal process for this. Ask your classroom teacher, if the school doesn’t have a formal process then it is time to put a request into the deputy principal or principal. Keep in mind that most schools won’t let you request a teacher, but they will let you make requests based on educational, social or emotional needs. So you need to make your request based on your students learning needs.

Step 2
Get clear on what support your child needs to have success in the classroom. “That could take me for ever I hear you saying. Well it doesn’t have to. Because I have a super easy strengths and weaknesses worksheet you can complete in 2 minutes.
Download it now and complete it in 2 minutes.
Step 3
Write your My Child Summary and have it ready to send to the new teacher. Yes create a document that can be emailed to your teacher week 1 of 2024. A summary of your child's diagnosis, strengths, weaknesses, support, accommodations and adjustments.
Download it now and personalise it for your child.
